On behalf of the Pacific Region of the Society of Air Force Nurses (SAFN), I would like to express our sincere condolences at the loss of your loved one. Please know that we are also mourning the loss of one of our colleagues and friends, Lieutenant Barbara Mercer. She was remembered in the Monthly Memorial Program Message which was sent to all SAFN members. I sincerely enjoyed reading her obituary and heartfelt story. I grew up in Ohio and joined the Air Force in 1978. I loved reading about her childhood, nursing school, and then her decision to join the Army. The War Years, Grand Island, and her flight nurse experience in the Azores was especially touching. Reminded me of driving cross-country to my first assignment at Edwards AFB in the Mojave Desert. I hadn't been farther than Indiana for nursing school at that time. Thank you so much for sharing her story. And even though I didn't have the privilege of meeting her, I feel like I know her. What a courageous, caring nurse and women. I hope she is registered in the Military Women's Memorial and that her story lives on. Many would enjoy reading it so I hope it is okay to tell SAFN members to read her obituary as we all honor her memory. Thank you so much.
