Lt. Barbara Evans Mercer

Bobby was born in Akron, Ohio. She trained as a nurse, and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943, stationed in Grand Island, Azores Islands, and Paris. Bobby made 63 trans-Atlantic flights to bring home wounded American Soldiers.

On her first night in Grand Island, Bobby met Lt. Lyle Mercer, her husband to be. They reunited many times in Europe during the war, and finally married in 1945 at the American Cathedral in Paris. After service they made their home in Seattle, raised 3 children; Simone Mercer (Don Bothell), Marc Mercer, Michele Mercer, and two beloved grandchildren, Marlow Mercer, Freeman Mercer.

Their shared wartime experiences led them to become life-long peace and justice activists.

May Bobby know peace, harmony, laughter and love; qualities that she held dear.

  2. On behalf of the Society of Air Force Nurses, please know we are mourning with you the death of our sister nurse, Lt Bobby Mercer. It takes a patriot, willing to give of themselves to other human beings in their time of need, to step forth and join the ranks of our U. S. Air Force Nurse Corps. Your beloved one will be mourned and missed by many who served alongside her. We will include her name in our Memorial Program of the Society of Air Force Nurses in commemoration of her life and service to our nation.
    With Sincerest Regards and Gratitude,
Wendy S. Collins, Lt Col, USAF, Nurse Corps (Retired)
